Castlevania Season 3 Trailer Teases a Bloody Good Vampire Story

There was never any doubt that Castlevania would return for a third season on Netflix. After all, not only has it turned out to be a successful series for the streaming service but it’s one of the best (if not THE best) adaptations of a video game franchise to date. And, if the official trailer is any indication, Castlevania season 3 is set to be the best season of the show yet.

The third season picks up where season 2 left off. With Dracula defeated, his manipulative general Carmilla now controls the forces of evil and is free to continue the reign of terror in Wallachia. Carmilla has enslaved the powerful forge master Hector, forcing him to create more monstrosities for her army to do her bidding.

Meanwhile, having parted ways after the battle in Dracula’s castle, it looks like Trevor and Sypha have gone on to have their own adventures while Alucard has remained as emo as ever in the wake of his father’s death by his hand. But with the rise of Carmilla and new threats to the land, the heroes will have to reunite for yet another battle against the darkness.

Amid all this chaos is Isaac, the human-hating forge master who has his own plans for destroying the world. The trailer teases that he’ll be yet another villain to be reckoned with throughout the season. You can watch the trailer below:

The trailer teases a few new characters as well as nods to monsters in the games. One of these monsters is Legion, the giant ball of writhing, intertwined bodies that terrorizes Alucard in Symphony of the Night. Malachi, a Cthulhu-like ghoul from Symphony of the Night, also makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance.

A mysterious woman is shown talking to a caged Hector. It’s unclear who this character is at the moment, but some are theorizing that it might Julia Laforeze, the witch who helped Hector in Curse of Darkness. That said, this character appears by Carmilla’s side later in the trailer, so she might be an ally after all.

Series writer Warren Ellis said of the new season in a blog post: “It’s a weird one – with increased episode count and budget, I went a bit mad and kind of tested the boundaries of the thing.”

Richard Armitage (Trevor), James Callis (Alucard), Graham McTavish (Dracula), Alejandra Reynoso (Sypha), Jaime Murray (Carmilla), Ade M’Cormack (Isaac), and Theo James (Hector) will all return for the 10-episode third season.

Castlevania season 3 premieres on Netflix on March 5.
